Trump Continues To Politicize Wildfire Disaster With Blast At 'Incompetent' Officials
Donald Trump lashed out at “incompetent” politicians on the ground in California who are dealing with massive, deadly wildfires, even as the president-elect has yet to take up an invitation to survey the damage himself.

Donald Trump has criticized California leaders over their handling of devastating wildfires but has not yet responded to Governor Gavin Newsom's invitation to visit the affected areas.
The fires, which have claimed at least 24 lives and destroyed thousands of homes, continue to rage, with powerful winds threatening further damage. Despite the mounting disaster, Trump has refrained from surveying the destruction firsthand and has instead used his Truth Social platform to attack state officials.
Trump referred to California politicians as “incompetent” and accused them of being unable to control the fires, calling the situation "one of the worst catastrophes in our country’s history." He reposted a meme showing the Hollywood Hills ablaze with the words "Trump Was Right" replacing the iconic "Hollywood" sign, while also sharing anti-Democrat content with his 8.5 million followers.
Governor Newsom, speaking on NBC’s Meet the Press, said he had reached out to Trump with “an open hand, not a closed fist” to encourage a visit. Newsom’s letter urged the president-elect to witness the devastation firsthand and thank first responders risking their lives.
Trump, however, escalated his criticism, targeting Newsom—whom he nicknamed “Newscum”—and other officials like Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass and President Joe Biden. He claimed, without evidence, that Newsom had refused to sign a "water restoration declaration" and falsely stated that fire hydrants lacked water.
The governor’s office responded, emphasizing their focus on protecting residents and ensuring firefighters have the resources they need. Meanwhile, Trump continued his attacks, dismissing climate change measures like the Green New Deal and labeling Los Angeles a "total wipeout."
Despite his comments, Trump has yet to confirm whether he will accept Newsom’s invitation to tour the damage and meet the firefighters on the front lines.
