Mexican president trolls Trump, suggests US renamed 'Mexican America'

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded to Donald Trump on Wednesday, humorously suggesting the U.S. be renamed "Mexican America" after Trump’s pledge to rename the Gulf of Mexico "the Gulf of America."

At her morning press conference, Sheinbaum showcased a 17th-century map labeling North America as "Mexican America" and noted that the Gulf of Mexico's name is internationally recognized. She added, "If he’s renaming, why not rename the U.S.? It sounds nice, doesn’t it?"

She emphasized her hope for positive relations with Trump, who will begin his second term on January 20. Trump had described his proposed name change as fitting, while accusing Mexico of enabling illegal immigration and being controlled by drug cartels.

Sheinbaum countered, stating, "In Mexico, it’s the people who govern."

Trump has intensified his criticism of Mexico in recent weeks, threatening tariffs and revisiting his proposal to designate Mexican drug cartels as terrorist organizations. His comments come amid continued rhetoric about immigration and border security as he prepares to return to the presidency.
